(RIT) Clothing, Fabric DYE..?
I’m really picky when it comes to the pants I wear. I have a couple pairs of jeans that were discontinued due to summer season being in now.. I love these pants although It’s going to be nearly impossible to find them in stores around here now.
And because they are fading and look more and more like crap every time I wash them, I was thinking about dying them.
Does that RIT stuff work?
And how so?
I was reading the back “instructions”.. But weirdly, they SUCK.
How long am I supposed to leave the articles of clothing in the dyed water for??
Will they dye better if I leave them in longer?
Or will it mess them up somehow??

Rit dye is a hot water dye that fades quickly and bleeds badly in the laundry. It’s not a good choice for dyeing cotton.
The best way to use Rit dye is to boil water in a huge cooking pot on top of your stove, add two to four times as much dye as the package indicates, and then simmer your clothing in it for at least half an hour. Shorter times or lower temperatures will yield paler colors. Note that you should never reuse a pot for cooking food after you have used it for dyeing clothes.
Even after you have used the right temperature of water and the right amount of time and dye, Rit dye will still fade badly in the laundry unless you treat it with a special cationic dye fixative, called Retayne. You usually cannot find this fixative locally, but must mail order it from a good dye supplier. If you’re going to bother to mail order Retayne, you might as well order a good dye, instead, so that Retayne is not necessary.
There are far better choices of dye. Any good fiber reactive dye will lasts a hundred times longer than Rit, and it’s a lot less trouble to apply, too, since you don’t have to use hot water. Fiber reactive dye is set with washing soda (also known as soda ash), instead of heat, so you can use it in room temperature water.
The easiest way to apply fiber reactive dye is in the washing machine. If you are in Europe or Australia, buy Dylon Machine Dye, and follow the instructions closely. You will have excellent results. Other equally good fiber reactive dyes include Procion MX dye, Tulip One Step Fashion Dye, Dylon Cold Dye, and Dylon Permanent Dye. You can’t buy these dyes at the grocery store, unlike Rit, but the results are so much better that it’s more than worth the trouble to find them. You should be able to find at least one of these brands of dye in a good crafts store or sewing store. If not, mail-order Procion MX dye from any of the suppliers listed in the link below. Order some soda ash while you are at it, to set the Procion MX dye. (Note that soda ash will not set Rit dye.)
