The Boulder Creek Quilters, an eclectic group formed in 1995, began
with members of the CU community as well as others. In order to improve our skills and
explore new techniques, we began creating quilts to enter in the Boulder County Fair,
which garnered many ribbons and awards. As a group, weve evolved from traditional
pattern piecing, to color exploration, to free-form art quilts.
BCQ Challenge 2007
A calling; a labor; or something best left for others? We envisioned the Kitchen Goddess in three parts, like Hecate or the Fates: the unrewarded cooking drudge, the fulfilled and joyous mistress of her domain, and one whose kitchen is clean and whose food is purchase already prepared. This quilt was created for and accepted into the "Kitchen Goddess" national juried art show.
This original design was inspired by the illustration entitled "The Three Realms" in the book The Secret Language of Symbols (p. 55) by David Fontana, Chronicle Books, 1994 Besides winning ribbons in the Boulder County Fair, "Otherworld" was exhibited in the 1st Denver National Quilt Show in 2006, and in the Sacred Threads Quilt Show in Reynoldsburg, OH in 2007. It was also pictured in the August, 2007 issue of Quilters Newsletter Magazine.
Originally inspired by the designs of Dianne S. Hire, this quilt evolved as work on it progressed. Each person designed a segment, using two fabrics common to each piece. We let our imaginations run wild, trying new and different techniques and adding as many additional fabrics as we chose. One quilt became three parts, configured in a variety of arrangements until it finally evolved into the present triptych configuration,
This quilt began as a traditional "Snails Trail" based on "Virginia Reel" in Judy Hopkins book Around the Block Again: More Rotary Cut Blocks. We chose vibrant, non-traditional colors to create this tessellating quilt, which is as beautiful on the back as on the front. Besides receiving a First Place and Judges Choice Award in the 2002 Boulder County Fair, the quilt hung in the 2003 Capitol Quilt Show in Denver.
This quilt was our first group project. We used a common
background fabric in a mottled dark gray, and were free to create any type or color of
star block we chose. Entered in the Boulder County Fair, it became the first of many
prize-winning group quilts. For sales inquiries and commissions click on the Contacts link below. |
