Fabric Set Questions

Fabric Set
Is there a way to dye silk fabric without having to heat-set it?

I want to dye some silk, but do not want to heat set it, but I need for it to be colorfast and set.

It is incorrect that you cannot dye silk without heat-setting. While acid dyes do require heat in order to bond to the silk, fiber reactive dyes do not.

Procion MX dye works well on silk at room temperature, if you set it with soda ash, instead of acid. It will have a slight effect on the hand of the silk, making it softer and slightly less shiny. Procion-dyed silk charmeuse retains most of its luster, but loses any stiffness. This makes Procion MX dye with soda ash ideal when you want soft silks, but not so ideal if you want them to be stiff.

The easiest way to find Procion MX dyes is to buy a tie-dye kit at the crafts store, one made by Jacquard, Dylon, Tulip, or Rainbow Rock. You should avoid the Rit All Purpose Dye tie-dye kit, as it contains inferior dyes which require heat to set, ideally half an hour or more at 185°F. For a vast choice of a hundred different colors of Procion MX dye, and for much cheaper prices per ounce of dye, mail-order your dyes from a good dye supplier, such as Dharma Trading Company in California or PRO Chemical & Dye in Massachusetts.

Fiber reactive dyes, such as Procion MX dye, are more colorfast than any other kind of dye you can use. Acid dyes are reasonably colorfast, but not as much so as fiber reactive dyes. Always prewash your fabric before dyeing.

There are different ways to apply the soda ash needed to set your Procion MX dye at room temperature. You can mix it with your dye, or you can presoak your silk fabric with soda ash and then either apply your dye to the wet silk, or let the soda ash dry in the silk and then apply the dye, or you can add the dye and then add the soda ash. The latter is what you’ll do if you want a single smooth solid color.

Procion MX dyes can also be used with vinegar or another acid, instead of soda ash, when you are dyeing silk or wool, but in that case it will act as an acid dye, not as a fiber reactive dye, and will need to be set with steam or a hot dyebath in order to have the most colorfast results.

Alternatively, you can use Jacquard Green Label Silk Colors, which are true dyes, and then, instead of heat-setting the dyes, you can set them chemically by using Jacquard Permanent Dyeset Concentrate. The colors will not be quite as intense, but they will be intense enough for almost anyone.

A guide to the aluminium fabrication

Aluminium fabrication is a very popular method these days. In fact, no matter where you go and where you look at, you will find some products made of aluminium. All these products are the example of the aluminium fabrication. In fact, it is rightly called the wonder metal. Well, there are several features of the aluminium as a metal that makes it such a preferred one for experts. For example, this is a metal that is light, strong, flexible, corrosion resistant and conductive of heat and electricity. The metal is not affected by the magnetic powers as well. Naturally, aluminium fabrications can be used in areas where other products can’t be used.

However, there are some problems that the
Aluminium fabricators
feel when they work with this metal. Well, the interesting part is that in most of the cases, it is the aforesaid features that cause the problems. For example, the metal transfers heat very quickly. This is why there is a greater chance of getting it burned during the fabrication process. Also, aluminium is very flexible causing other problems in the welding process as well. Therefore, even the most experienced
Aluminium fabricators
find it difficult to work with aluminium. Definitely, they have to take up a different methodology for the aluminium welding and fabrication.

Basically, the fabrication of aluminium should take care of three important areas – the power sources, the set up and related methodologies and the ways to feed the aluminium wire. Well, each of the areas is very vast and complicated. Anyways, the set up and the related techniques is the first thing that the aluminium fabricators should be concerned with. This is the process that is followed in the steel welding as well. However, when it comes to the aluminium fabrication, there are some significant changes.

For example, the use of the helically wound up steel liner is not the ideal one for the aluminium fabrication. For, this would result in scratches on the soft aluminium wire creating shavings. Rather, you should use the liner made of nylon or Teflon. The wire guide too, is useful to minimize the shavings and frictions. When it comes to the drive roles, one must use the u shaped groove to eliminate the use of sharp edges that can shave the aluminium wire off. Make sure that the pressure on the rolls is not too intense as that can make the aluminium wire to crash.

The good aluminium fabricators will know that a greater hole is needed for aluminium welding as it expands more than steel. Also, the brake tension on the aluminium wire must be set loosely. Finally, you must keep the gun cable straight.
