Cheap DIY way to hang 20 foot wide curtains?
I’m using cloth from joann fabrics as a wall covering in my basement so that it looks like an old movie theater with velvet walls. It’s basically three 20 foot x 10 foot panels of curtain that need hung.
Is there a cheap DIY way to hang this much material along the walls running to the ceiling without stapling it to the actual ceiling?
I was thinking of buying the steel cable alligator clip curtain things at Ikea, but they’d be around $75 for what seems like a $20 job.
I have very wide kitchen windows. I did this project hanging decorative kitchen towels along the top of my windows.
I went to Walmart (you can go to any hardware/home improvement store) buy a length of cable wire. I bought twisted cable wire but any kind of picture hanging wire is fine as long as it is thick enough to hold the fabric you are using. You can probably buy the cable already packaged in a 25 or 50 ft. length.
Cut it a couple of feet longer than you need then loop each end and secure it with a small cable lock nut. These can be found by the wire or chain/cable items in the store.
Hang two hefty cup hooks on each end to hang the loop on. Place the cup hooks so the cable is taut. Drape your fabric over the cable after you put it up. If necessary, you can place some small hooks or screws along the length to stabilize the weight.
It looks clean, discreet and contemporary. The entire project cost me about $13 including the towels I hung up.
