Fabric Loom Questions

Fabric Loom
hand weaving- converting a 4shaft draft to double cloth?

I have a four shaft draft that i want to convert into an eight shaft double cloth so i can weave a piece of fabric that is twice the length of my loom. I have the threading, tie-up and treadling worked out for a single layer of fabric but don’t know how to incorporate the second layer of fabric. can anyone help?

You want to make it double the length or double the width? For a double length you need to measure your warp twice as long is all. For double width, there is a technique to do this on just the 4 shafts, but you can do it on the 8, It involves threading the pattern appropriately through each shaft (1,2,3,4,8,7,6,5, I think) and then raising all but the bottom shaft to make one pass of the shuttle, then all but the upper shaft for the return pass. I believe Deb Chandler’s book on weaving covers it. It’s been a long time since I tried it.

How are Narrow Fabrics Manufactured?

Narrow fabrics, also called small wares are the fabrics that do not exceed 4S cm in width and usually have 2 selvages. Elastic, tape, ribbon, lace, cords, straps, ribbons, webbings etc. all are narrow fabrics. In this article we are going to discuss the materials used for making narrow fabrics and what all techniques do the narrow fabric manufacturers adopt in the making of narrow fabrics.

Materials Used for Making Narrow Fabrics

As the name suggests, narrow fabrics are made from different types of textile materials. These include  cotton, nylon, satin, velvet, polyester, jute etc. Many of them are made of such materials as Teflon, rubber, fiberglass and even beads. While Teflon and rubber are made for use in industrial applications, beads are used for making small ware used in crafts and decoration applications. Of all, however, cotton is the most extensively used material for making laces, wicks, tapes, webbings etc.
while nylon, polyester, rubber are widely used by manufacturers of industrial narrow fabrics. Here is a brief description about the particular materials used in their manufacturing

  • Satin- is used for making tapes, laces, & ribbons, etc. having a luxurious feel.
  • Velvet- Various tapes are made from velvet and they are widely used for crafts.
  • Polyester- is usually used for making webbings and straps used for further making of handles for bags etc.
  • Teflon- is used for various types of tapes used in industrial applications.
  • Rubber- is widely used for making industrial cords and strings etc. for heavy duty works .
  • Nylon- The very durable nylon is used for making high quality tapes, straps, etc.
  • In fact nylon straps are commercially used for such goods as watch straps, heavy duty bags, waistbands etc. due to their strength.

Techniques for Making Narrow Fabrics

The woven narrow fabrics (those lesser than 12 inches in width and containing woven selvages) like ribbons, tapes and webbings are made on special narrow fabrics looms with the fundamental principle of warp filling interlacing. On a loom, multiple sets of warp yarns may be beamed at the same time to make several narrow fabrics. As far as types of looms used for making narrow fabrics is concerned, most of the time, needle looms are used by the manufacturers. However, the use of shuttle looms are also not uncommon for making narrow fabrics.

Apart from weaving certain narrow fabrics are made through braiding and twisting too. Braids, as they are known are made by causing the threads to intertwine with each other at a set angle. Knitting is yet another technique for making narrow fabrics like the knit elastic and elastic cords. In this technique, the yarns are formed into loops and then this loops are intermeshed into a structure.

This was only an overview of the materials and the techniques of making narrow fabrics. To know more about various types of narrow fabrics, go to the site of narrow fabrics manufacturers.
