Fabric Gun Questions

Fabric Gun
Can I cover a headboard without a staple gun?

I’m wanting to “redo” our very ugly, wooden headboard. I’ve already found the fabric I’m wanting to use. I was wondering, instead of using a staple gun to stick the fabric to the wood, could I just make a kind of slipcover type thing to go over the padding? I would probably just hotglue or super glue to padding to the wood. If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
The headboard is a simple rectangle shape. No fancy curves or shapes or anything.

Superglue is not a good choice — it doesn’t have enough volume to hold the thick padding.

Hot glue might work to attach the padding, but you might find the layers slipping and sliding as you try to adhere the loose edges of the fabric cover.

Really, the staple gun is the cheapest and sturdiest way to go. You can pull the fabric tighter, secure it through the layer of padding, etc. The glue probably wouldn’t hold, for example, if you had to tug or shove to move the headboard to vacuum or run a power cord.

You could sew a slipcover (like a giant pillow case) to slip over. Lay the fabric on the floor, and arrange the padding. Use a needle and thread or a sewing machine to anchor the padding in several places (one end, at a natural crease over the top of the headboard, etc.). Sew the sides together, so that it looks like a giant pillow case, and slide it over the headboard. This would also be easy to change, update, or clean if something got on it.

DIY Headboard Ideas: Fabric Covered Headboard

One of the easiest DIY headboard ideas is a fabric covered headboard. It is easier and cheaper than you might think. The best part is that you can customize it to fit your specific taste and style.

Fabric Covered Headboard

For this fabric covered headboard you will need: plywood, foam, batting, fabric and a staple gun. You can find plywood at any home improvement store. Take your measurements before you go and then ask them to cut the piece to the right size for you. The next step is to attach your foam. You can use any size foam depending on how cushy you want the headboard to be. Either use a staple gun to attach or use spray adhesive if your foam is a little thicker. Next, lay the batting on top and secure to the back with a staple gun. Do the same thing with your fabric and then secure the entire headboard to the wall. It’s that simple.

A few tips on buying your materials:

When buying foam, wait for a half off sale or until you have a coupon. It can be expensive if you need a large amount. You don’t need a really thick foam, so buy something a little thinner or skip it all together to save some money. When buying fabric, head straight to the clearance section and see if you can find something there first. If you’ve found a pricey fabric, again the best option is to wait for a sale or use a coupon. Fabric stores always have 50% off sales, so just ask when the next one is coming and sign up to receive the store coupons via mail. This will save you tons of money on all those gorgeous fabrics.
