Baby Playmat

How to Sew a Roll-up Baby Playmat

Your child will spend most of the first few months of his or her life on their tummy-so why not make them comfortable? Your child will spend a lot of time on the floor and on their tummy so that they can strengthen their muscles and eventually learn to roll over. Follow this basic guide to making a playmat for your baby to protect them from dirt and germs during tummy time. Best of all, the play mat rolls up so it is easily stashed in the diaper bag for play time on the go.

Materials:

  • Quilter’s cotton fabric
  • Ruler Scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron

Steps:

1. Measure and cut 25 6 1/2-inch squares of fabric and a 30-inch square of fabric.

2. Divide the 6 1/2-inch squares of fabric into five piles of five squares each. Sew each pile of squares into a strip by sewing the squares together side-by-side with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

3. Sew the strips of squares together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance along the long edges to form a large square. The large square will be a 5-by-5 grid of all the smaller squares.

4. Measure and cut two foot-long pieces of 1-inch-wide ribbon.

5. Place the 30-inch square of fabric and the pieces together square of fabric together with the right sides facing each other. Line up the ends of the two pieces of ribbon you cut. Place the two pieces of ribbon between the two squares 6 inches in from one corner so the ends of the ribbon are flush with the edge of the fabric. Pin the two pieces of fabric together along the edges and the ribbons in place between them.

6. Sew along all four edges of the two squares with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Leave a 6-inch opening in the middle of one of the edges. Turn the play mat right side out through the 6-inch opening.

7. Fold the raw edges of the fabric in a 1/2-inch along the 6-inch opening. Iron these folds and the rest of the four edges of the play mat.

8. Top stitch along all four sides of the play mat with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Use a decorative stitch for the top stitch to give the play mat an added decorative touch.

9. Lay the play mat out flat with the ribbon strips coming out of the top edge. Fold the play mat in half left to right. Fold it in half again in the same direction. Roll the play mat up from the bottom to the top. Wrap the ribbon strips around the rolled up play mat and tie them in a bow to make the play mat easy to pack in the diaper bag.

Mini skirts are a simple sewing project, and they don’t take very much fabric. You can buy a mini skirt pattern from a fabric store or online, or make a basic mini skirt following the directions below. When you measure your hips and waist, the measuring tape should be snug but comfortable, since mini skirts should be tight, but not too tight.

Things You’ll need:

  • Flexible measuring tape
  • Fabric
  • Matching thread
  • 7- or 9-inch zipper
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Iron
  • Ironing board
  • Sewing machine
  • Zipper foot
  • Seam ripper

Cut the Mini Skirt Fabric

    • 1. Measure the fullest part of your hips. Divide this measurement in half and add 2 1/2 inches.
    • 2. Cut 2 rectangles of fabric, each this wide and 3 inches longer than you want the mini skirt.
    • 3. Place the pieces of fabric right sides together and pin them together.
    • 4. Measure your waist, or the place where you want the top of the mini skirt. Divide this measurement by two and add 2 1/2 inches.
    • 5. Trim the upper corners of the fabric so that the top of the mini skirt is this wide.

    Sew the Mini Skirt

    • 1. Stitch along one side of the skirt using 5/8-inch seam allowance. Press the seam allowance open.
    • 2. Set the sewing machine to the longest stitch length. Baste the opposite side of the skirt together using 5/8-inch seam allowance. Press the seam allowance open.
    • 3. Turn the zipper pull up. Pin the zipper tape to the basted seam allowance, so the top of the zipper tape is just below the top of the fabric.
    • 4. Attach the zipper foot to the sewing machine. Sew both sides of the zipper tape to the seam allowance only.
    • 5. Set the sewing machine to a normal stitch length. Stitch the side of the skirt below the zipper.
    • 6. Turn the skirt right side out. Topstitch the zipper close to the seam using a zipper foot.
    • 7. Carefully remove the basting stitches using a seam ripper. Make sure to remove any loose threads so they don’t get caught in the zipper.
    • 8. Hem the top edge of the skirt by folding it over about 5/8 toward the inside. Press it flat. Fold it over another 5/8 inch and press it again. Topstitch along the fold using matching thread.
    • 9. Hem the bottom of the mini skirt the same way as the top.

Ballet Shoes

Flat ballet shoes are popular footwear for both girls and women. These are comfortable and fashionable shoes that are great additions to any shoe wardrobe. If you have moderate sewing skills it is possible to make your own ballet shoes out of cotton fabric and leather. Experiment with different colors and patterns.

Things you’ll need:
12X12-inch square of leather
24X12-inch square of heavy-weight cotton fabric
Ready-made shoes that fit well
Pencil and paper
Fabric marker
Sewing machine
Sewing notions (pins, thread, scissors)
1/2-inch-wide elastic

1. Place the paper onto a work surface and place the ready-made shoes onto the paper. Use a pencil to arefully trace around the outside edges of both shoes to create outlines of the soles. Label the left and right sole patterns. Extend the outlines by half an inch for seam allowances, and cut out the extended outlines with the scissors.

2. Place the leather onto a work surface with the wrong side facing up. Place the paper sole patterns onto the leather and trace around the patterns with the fabric marker. Cut out the sole outlines with the scissors.

3. Place the paper sole patterns onto another piece of paper. You need to make a pattern for the upper part of the ballet shoes. The inside edge of the upper piece should match the outside edge of each sole piece. Extend the pattern out from this edge 3 inches, as shown in the diagram. You may need to experiment while making this pattern piece until you have a piece that will work. Add a half-inch around the edges for seam allowances.

Make both a left and a right upper-pattern piece using the left and right sole pieces. Label the left and right patterns. Cut out the paper pattern pieces with the scissors.

4. Fold the cotton fabric onto your work surface with the wrong sides facing out. Place the pattern pieces onto the cotton and cut out the cotton pieces following the pattern. You need a total of four cotton fabric pieces (two for each shoe).

5. Turn under the raw edges of the inside of the cotton shoe pieces a half-inch. Press this edge and sew along the fold 3/8-inch from the folded edge to finish the inside edges.

6. Place the left shoe pieces together with the right sides facing each other and sew both edges together with a half-inch seam allowance. Repeat with the right shoe pieces in the same fashion.

7. Match the upper portion of the left shoe to the left sole with the right sides facing each other. Sew around the edges with a half-inch seam allowance. Repeat with the right shoe in the same fashion.

8. Turn the shoes right side out and put the shoes on. Measure across the top of the foot between the side edges of the shoes. Remove the shoes.

9. Cut two lengths of elastic to the measurement taken in step 8 and sew the elastic to the inside edges of the shoes to add comfort and security while you are wearing the ballet shoes.

What are the top fabric stores in Atlanta that fashion designers purchase their fabrics from?

I’m looking for fabric store other than Jo-Ann or Hancock’s which carries a wide variety of imported fabrics. Also are there any excellent pattern makers in Atlanta? Thanks appreciate the help.
Where are the notable fabric stores in or around Atlanta? Looking for unique fabrics not Hancock treads.

I’m not a sewer, so this really isn’t my thing. But …. my dental hygienist turned me on to a place that you might like: Fabric and Fringe Warehouse (2440 Canton Road in Marietta. Telephone 770/794-8106.)

They have a wide variety of interesting fabric — including a lot of remnants — at great prices. We were in the market for something beautiful for my dining room chairs, and I was quite pleased with the selection.

What kinds of fabric work best for photography backdrops?

Right now I’m using a bunch of old black sheets, and my pictures turn out nice. But sheets are expensive to buy so I need to know what kinds of fabric work best, and also what kinds of fabric would anyone recommend for different seasons? Any other suggestions about props etc, that would help too! Thanks in advance!

I agree with fhotoace to a degree his prices are about right for most areas, but as far as sheets being expensive? I was getting the T-shirt material King Size sheet sets for 20 dollars… comes in black, white, gray, blue and red at Target. Don’t know if you have one in your area though. With this set I got flat sheet, fitted sheet and 2 pillow cases. Flat was perfect for backdrops, and the fitted along with the pillow cases did great for covering props etc. I also found the same material sheet set at another store for 25 dollars and use it for green screen shoot.
